Kostas Iliadis Biography
Painter & sculptor Kostas Iliadis was born in Athens, Greece, in July 1903. Since 1914 (at the age of 11) he entered the painting workshop of Georgios Roilos, being admitted as a trainee of “exceptional talent”.
In 1920 he enrolled the A.S.K.T. (Greek Academy of Fine Arts), were he studied under Georgios Iakovidis, Georgios Roilos and Nicolaos Lytras. He graduated the Academy with honors in 1927, winning the highly respected awards “Chryssovergion” and “Thomaidion”.
In 1929, he won the great “Averoff Price for Painting” by unanimous vote. During that time he is working with painter Georgios Chatzopoulos in classic works art restoration.
In 1930-33 he receives a scholarship of the Greek National Polytechnic School to continue his studies at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris, France. In Paris he associates with all great painters of those times and he becomes a close associate of painter Dimitris Galanis (1879-1966), from whom he learns the art of engraving.
Upon his relocation to Greece in 1933, he was placed immediately in the the center of all artistic activity as a painter, teacher and a member of the “Art Team”, as well as a founding member of the Chamber of Fine Arts of Greece.
In 1938 he received the “State Silver Medal” & Honorary Diploma for his avid participation in all artistic events and excibitions both in Greece and abroad.
He participated in an great number of International exhibitions, Museum events and Art Salons, some of which are: Salon d'Automne (1931), Salon des Tuileries (1933), Biennale di Venezia (1934), Biennale Sao Paolo (1937), the Exhibition of Greek Fine Art in Vienna, as well as exhibitions at the National Museums of Tel Aviv, Haifa, Moscow, Bucarest, the Kuibishev Fine Arts Museum, the Unesco International Excibition at Cagnes-sur-Mer France etc.
In late 1938 he organized a counter excibition of younger Greek painters who where excluded from dictator Metaxa’s A’ National Exposition at Zappion Hall, Athens. By this action he became ostracized by the government for several years including the war and the civil war years.
In the 1950’s he makes a major change to his style and he turned to modernism.
In 1984 he received the Gold medal of the City of Athens.
In 1985 the National Gallery organized an impressive retrospective excibition of all his works, and published a hard-bound comprehensive catalogue for the artist.
Many of Kostas Iliadis’ works are in the permanent collections of the National Gallery of Athens, the Cultural Center of the City of Athens and in the collections of most Educational & Cultural Foundations in Greece, in the collections of several Banks and in numerous private collections around the globe.
